The coin was struck over the defect, which is why the surrounding design detail remains intact around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Capped Bust half dollar was designed by John Reich and struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1807 to 1836 in the lettered edge format. The reverse shows an eagle with a shield, an olive branch and arrows, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, E PLURIBUS UNUM on the ribbon, and the 50 C. denomination below. Mintage for 1821 was 1,305,797.
