The obverse shows Liberty standing in an archway holding a shield and an olive branch, with IN GOD WE TRUST across the wall on either side, LIBERTY around the top, and the date at the base. The mint mark sits to the left of the date at the base of the wall. The Type 1 reverse shows the eagle in flight with thirteen stars arranged seven left and six right below the wings, which is the quickest way to separate Type 1 from the Type 2 design that followed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHermon MacNeil designed the series. Type 1 production at San Francisco in 1917 was 1,952,000 pieces, a small figure next to the Philadelphia Type 1 mintage that year. The design was modified partway through 1917, with the reverse stars repositioned and the obverse altered, which is why 1917 exists in both types and why the two are collected separately. The head detail on the obverse is the usual grading point for the series, since it wore quickly in circulation.
