The Cubs selected him in the 1940 Rule 5 draft and he spent 1941 and 1942 in Chicago before serving in the Navy from 1943 through 1945, which cost him the Cubs' run to the 1945 World Series. He returned to Chicago in 1946 and had his best year in 1948, catching 102 games and batting .300 with 18 doubles and 45 RBI. The Cubs sent him to the Cincinnati Reds in June 1950, as noted on the back of this card, and he finished his playing career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1951. His career line was a .263 average with 357 hits, 20 home runs and 187 RBI.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eScheffing stayed in the game for decades after he stopped playing. He managed the Chicago Cubs from 1957 through 1959 and the Detroit Tigers from 1961 into June 1963, and his 1961 Detroit club won 101 games and finished second. He called Tigers games on radio and television alongside Ernie Harwell in 1964, then joined the New York Mets, where he ran player development before taking over as general manager from 1970 to 1974.
