At Penn State he handled quarterback, defensive back, punter and placekicker, intercepting seven passes as a defensive back in his senior year. In a 1955 win over Syracuse he threw a touchdown, scored the tying touchdown, kicked the winning extra point, made an interception, and tackled Syracuse star Jim Brown in the open field to prevent a score. Brown would become his teammate two years later.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Browns used their first-round pick in the 1957 NFL Draft on Jim Brown and took Plum in the second round, 17th overall. He took over the starting job in 1958 and ran an offense built around Brown and Bobby Mitchell. His passer rating of 110.4 in 1960 stood as the best single-season mark in NFL history until Joe Montana broke it in 1989, and his 89.9 rating across five Cleveland seasons ranks first among Browns quarterbacks with at least 750 attempts.
