He went to Ohio University on a basketball scholarship and played both football and baseball there, earning first-team All-MAC honors in 1952. He signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds in 1953 and stayed in the organization until entering the military in 1956, serving two years as an Air Force lieutenant.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eCostello joined the Browns as an undrafted free agent in 1957 at age 25 and started all 12 games at middle linebacker as a rookie. He played 10 seasons in Cleveland through 1966, appearing in 130 games and missing only two, and recorded 18 interceptions, eight fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns for the club. He was the middle linebacker on the 1964 NFL Championship team and intercepted a pass in the 27-0 win over Baltimore. He finished his playing career with the New York Giants in 1967 and 1968, ending with 22 career interceptions for 299 yards. He later coached linebackers under Paul Brown in Cincinnati from 1969 through 1973 and served as defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 1974 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 1975 and 1976. He was inducted into the Cleveland Browns Legends Program in 2011.
