At the University of Miami he played both ways, intercepting 10 passes in 1951 on the way to All-American honors, and finished his college career with 17 interceptions and over 1,000 rushing yards. He was the first Hurricane to have his number retired and the first Miami player taken in the first round of the NFL Draft.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Bears selected Dooley eighth overall in the 1952 NFL Draft, and he spent his entire ten-year playing career in Chicago from 1952 through 1961, finishing with 211 receptions for 3,172 yards and 16 touchdowns. He returned to the club as an assistant in 1963, the year the Bears won the NFL Championship, and served as head coach from 1968 through 1971. He later worked under Mike Ditka in Chicago and was on staff for the Super Bowl XX title.
