Smith Jr. was born July 19, 1932 in Greenville, South Carolina and played college football at North Carolina A\u0026amp;T. The Chicago Bears drafted him in the fifteenth round of the 1955 NFL Draft, 179th overall, and he spent a year completing Army service before joining the club. San Francisco claimed him on waivers from Chicago late in the 1956 season and initially used him on defense.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eMoved to fullback, Smith carried 207 times for 1,036 yards in 1959, a total second in the NFL that season only to Jim Brown, and added 10 rushing touchdowns in 14 games. He was a first-team All-NFL selection that year by both The Sporting News and United Press International and a second-team Associated Press All-Pro, and he took home the 49ers' Len Eshmont Award. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection. Over 11 seasons with the Bears, 49ers and Dallas Cowboys he rushed for 4,672 yards and 40 touchdowns and caught 127 passes for 1,122 yards. His 4,370 rushing yards with San Francisco still rank among the top handful in franchise history.
