He tied the world record of 9.3 seconds in the 100 yards in 1958 and went on to tie world marks in the 220 yards and the 200 meters. In 1959 he won three gold medals at the Pan American Games in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100 relay, and he was widely regarded as the fastest man in the world. He won both the 100 and 200 at the 1960 United States Olympic Trials and went to the Rome Olympics as the favorite in both sprints, finishing sixth in each final. In the 4x100 relay final he ran past the exchange zone and the American team was disqualified.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe San Francisco 49ers drafted Norton in the fourth round of the 1960 NFL Draft, 46th overall, and he spent the 1960 and 1961 seasons with the club as a back and kick returner, appearing in nine games.
