He starred at Cranston East High School and then at Brown University, where he played defense, was a first-team NCAA All-American in 1970, captained the tennis team, graduated with a degree in Russian Studies and was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship. He played 35 games over two seasons with the Blues before a trade to the Rangers and then, in November 1972, to Atlanta. The Flames years were his best: he topped 30 goals twice, with 31 in 1974-75 and 34 in 1975-76, led the team in scoring both years, and represented Atlanta in the 1975 and 1976 All-Star Games.
