He was later named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Decade for the 1970s. The back of this card carries Bear Bryant's line that Newsome was the finest receiver Alabama ever had.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eCleveland took him in the first round of the 1978 draft with the 23rd pick and moved him to tight end. He was named the Browns Offensive Player of the Year as a rookie, the first rookie to take that award in 25 years, and made the writers All-Rookie team, which the back of this card notes along with his 38 catches for 589 yards that season.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eNewsome played 13 seasons in Cleveland and never missed a game, appearing in 198 straight. He finished with 662 receptions for 7,980 yards and 47 touchdowns, all Browns records at the time and NFL records for a tight end when he retired. He was a three time Pro Bowl pick, a two time first team All-Pro, a member of the 1980s All-Decade Team, and he went into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
