Undrafted by the NFL, he was taken in the third round of the inaugural USFL draft by the Michigan Panthers and won the league's first championship in 1983, beating the Philadelphia Stars 24-22. That season he threw for 3,568 yards and 27 touchdowns and was named USFL Championship Game MVP, Most Outstanding Quarterback and Sporting News USFL Player of the Year. He finished as the USFL's all-time leading passer.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eKnown as the Cajun Cannon, Hebert signed with the Saints in 1985 and led New Orleans to the first winning season and first playoff berth in franchise history in 1987. He went 49-26 as a starter for a franchise that had gone 72-176 before he arrived, and in 1992 he guided the Saints to a 12-4 record, the best in team history at the time, while throwing for a career-high 3,287 yards. He moved to the Atlanta Falcons for the 1993 season and earned a Pro Bowl selection that year. Across his NFL career he passed for 21,683 yards and 135 touchdowns.
