He won the Triple Crown twice, in 1942 and 1947, took MVP honors in 1946 and 1949, and won six batting titles. He served as a Marine Corps pilot in World War II and again in Korea, losing nearly five seasons in his prime, and still finished with 521 home runs, a .344 career average and a .482 on-base percentage that is the highest in major league history. He was named an All-Star 19 times, homered in his final at bat in 1960, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
