1723/2 Wood’s Hibernia Halfpenny — Overdate — PCGS VF25 — Ex: Richard August Collection

PCGS Cert #51225232

Pedigreed colonial copper with a story spanning three countries! This is a 1723/2 Wood’s Hibernia Halfpenny — the desirable OVERDATE variety, with the 3 punched over a 2 in the date — graded VF25 by PCGS and bearing the Richard August Collection pedigree right on the label, from one of the most respected colonial copper collections assembled in modern times.

The history is irresistible. William Wood obtained a royal patent from King George I to strike copper coinage for Ireland — but the Irish, furious at coinage imposed without their consent (Jonathan Swift savaged the coins in his famous Drapier’s Letters), rejected it outright. Much of Wood’s Hibernia coinage was ultimately shipped across the Atlantic to circulate in the American colonies, which is why these pieces are collected today as early American colonial coppers and listed in the Red Book. George I’s laureate portrait graces the obverse; the seated figure of Hibernia with her harp fills the reverse.
