CONDITION

Presented honestly at the assigned grade. Wear is consistent with SGC 2 (GOOD) on a card well over a century old: rounded and worn corners, chipping and roughness along the edges, and light soiling and print speckling across the front. The printed reverse shows heavy even toning, scattered foxing specks, a visible wrinkle running through the text panel, and edge wear matching the front. Despite the wear, the coyote illustration holds strong color and the Cowan's advertising panel is fully legible. ABOUT THE CARD AND SET

The V2 Cowan Co. Animal Cards were issued in the 1920s by The Cowan Co., Limited of Toronto, one of Canada's best known chocolate and cocoa makers of the period. The set runs 24 cards, each a wide horizontal color illustration of a North American animal named in both English and French. This is #19, listed as Coyote and Chien de Prairie, with the Cowan's Royal Milk and Mell-O-Milk Chocolate 5 cent cakes advertising panel at the right side of the front.

This example carries the printed back, which is where these cards get much of their charm. The reverse gives a short bilingual write-up on the coyote, noting that it belongs to the dog family, measures roughly 49 inches from nose to tail tip, is usually found on the prairie, and resembles a smaller fox. Below that is the original premium offer inviting collectors to send in a complete set in exchange for a large picture of a fox, beaver, moose, grizzly bear, or wolf, along with the company imprint for The Cowan Co., Limited on Sterling Road in Toronto.
