CONDITION

Presented honestly at the assigned grade. At MS67+ FB this is a superb gem, near the top of the grade scale, carrying both the plus designation for superior quality within the grade and the Full Bands designation, which PCGS awards only when the horizontal bands on the torch of the reverse show full separation. The standout feature of this coin is the toning: rich multicolor rainbow patina across both sides, running through amber, gold, russet, blue, and green tones over the obverse and reverse. Toning is a matter of personal taste and is subjective, so please judge the color for yourself from the photos, which are of the actual coin in hand.

ABOUT THE COIN

The Roosevelt dime was introduced in 1946, the year Franklin D. Roosevelt was honored on the coin following his death, and the pre-1965 issues are struck in 90 percent silver. This is the first-year 1946-S, minted in San Francisco, indicated by the S mintmark on the reverse. The obverse features John R. Sinnock's portrait of Roosevelt, and the reverse a torch flanked by olive and oak branches. The Full Bands designation refers to full detail on the torch bands and is a meaningful value driver on the series, and a first-year San Francisco example at MS67+ with strong rainbow toning brings together grade, strike, and eye appeal.

Roosevelt dimes are widely collected, and superb gem examples with dramatic original rainbow toning appeal both to registry set collectors chasing high grades and to toned coin specialists who buy for color. Coins like this one, where the color is bold and fully original in the holder, tend to sell on their eye appeal as much as their grade.
