DESCRIPTION

1961 Fleer #12 Bobby Mitchell, Cleveland Browns. Graded PSA 8 NM-MT. Certification number 40234930. The photos show the exact card and holder you will receive, so please review them closely for condition and centering.

The card lists Mitchell as a halfback, 6'0", 190 pounds, hometown Hot Springs, Arkansas, college Illinois, age 26. The back notes his 90-yard run from scrimmage, which was then a Cleveland record, and that he led the Browns in receiving with 45 catches.

Robert Cornelius Mitchell was born June 6, 1935 in Hot Springs, Arkansas and attended Langston High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball and ran track. He was offered a baseball contract by the St. Louis Cardinals but chose the University of Illinois instead.

The Browns drafted Mitchell in the seventh round of the 1958 NFL Draft, 84th overall, and he shared a backfield with Jim Brown from 1958 through 1961, giving Cleveland two future Hall of Fame runners at once. He rushed for 2,297 yards with the Browns and still holds the team's best rookie rushing average at 6.3 yards per carry. In December 1961 Cleveland traded him to Washington for the rights to Ernie Davis, making Mitchell the first Black player to sign with that franchise. Moved to flanker, he led the NFL in receptions in 1962 with 72 and in receiving yards in 1963 with 1,436, and he never caught fewer than 58 passes in his first six seasons there.

Mitchell retired after 1968 with 521 receptions for 7,954 yards, 2,735 rushing yards, 91 total touchdowns and 14,078 combined net yards, which at the time trailed only Jim Brown in NFL history. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time All-NFL pick, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983. He worked in the Washington front office for decades afterward, including as assistant general manager, and the team retired his number 49 in 2020. Mitchell died April 5, 2020 at age 84.
