DESCRIPTION

1975 O-Pee-Chee #240 Tony Esposito, Chicago Black Hawks. Graded PSA 8 NM-MT. Certification number 19327216. The card is from the 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee hockey set. The photos show the exact card and holder you will receive, so please review them closely for condition and centering.

The back lists him as a goalie, born April 23, 1944 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, home Elmhurst, Illinois, 5'11" and 185 pounds, drafted from Montreal, nine years pro. It notes his record 15 shutouts as a rookie in 1969-70 and his All-America honors at Michigan Tech. His NHL totals through 1974-75 are listed as 378 games, 852 goals against, 52 shutouts and a 2.29 average.

Anthony James Esposito played college hockey at Michigan Tech and debuted with Montreal in 1968-69, appearing in 13 games. The Canadiens left him unprotected in the June 1969 intraleague draft in order to keep Gump Worsley, and Chicago claimed him. He went 38-17-8 as a rookie with a 2.17 goals against average and 15 shutouts, a mark that still stands as the modern single-season record, and he won both the Calder Trophy and the Vezina Trophy that year while joining his brother Phil as a First Team All-Star.

Esposito won the Vezina again in 1972, sharing it with Gary Smith, and in 1974, sharing it with Bernie Parent. He was a three-time First Team All-Star and a two-time Second Team selection, appeared in six All-Star Games, won at least 30 games in seven consecutive seasons, and took Chicago to the Stanley Cup Final in 1971 and 1973. He was one of the pioneers of the butterfly style and sewed his own pads. In 1972 he shared goaltending duties with Ken Dryden for Canada in the Summit Series against the Soviet Union, winning Game 2 in Toronto and the pivotal Game 7 in Moscow.

He retired in 1984 with a record of 423-306-151, a 2.92 goals against average and 76 shutouts in 886 games, and remains the Blackhawks career leader in wins with 418 and shutouts with 74. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988, the Blackhawks retired his number 35 that November, and the NHL named him one of the 100 Greatest Players in league history in 2017. Esposito died August 10, 2021 at age 78.
