DESCRIPTION

1975 O-Pee-Chee #289 Rick Martin, Buffalo Sabres. 1974-75 First Team All-Stars subset card. Graded PSA 8 NM-MT. Certification number 40355154. The card is from the 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee hockey set. The photos show the exact card and holder you will receive, so please review them closely for condition and centering.

The front carries the 1974-75 First Team All-Stars banner and identifies him as a left wing with Buffalo. Rather than a statistics table, the back is a six-panel illustrated career highlights feature noting that he was second in the NHL with 21 power play goals in 1975, scored 44 goals in his rookie season, was a first-round draft choice, led the OHA with 71 goals in 1971, led Buffalo with 52 goals in 1975, and was a First Team All-Star in both 1974 and 1975.

Richard Lionel Martin was born July 26, 1951 in Verdun, Quebec and played junior hockey with the Montreal Junior Canadiens, where he put up 121 points. Buffalo selected him fifth overall in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. He scored 44 goals as a rookie in 1971-72, which stood as the NHL rookie record at the time, and it earned him the first of seven consecutive All-Star Game appearances.

Martin played left wing on the line centered by Gilbert Perreault with Rene Robert on the right side, the trio known as the French Connection, which carried the Sabres to the 1975 Stanley Cup Final in only the franchise's fifth season. He scored 52 goals in both 1973-74 and 1974-75, the season this card honors, and set a career high with 95 points that year. He reached 40 goals five times.

He won a Canada Cup with Canada in 1976 and finished his career with a short stint in Los Angeles, retiring in 1982 with 384 goals, 317 assists and 701 points in 685 games, plus 53 points in 63 playoff games. He holds the Sabres record with 21 hat tricks and ranks second in franchise goals. Buffalo retired his number 7 on November 15, 1995, hanging it alongside Robert's 14 and Perreault's 11 under a French Connection banner. Martin died March 13, 2011 at age 59.
