DESCRIPTION

1975 O-Pee-Chee #38 Ed Van Impe, Philadelphia Flyers. Graded PSA 8 NM-MT. Certification number 19764790. The card is from the 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee hockey set. The photos show the exact card and holder you will receive, so please review them closely for condition and centering.

The back lists him on defense, born May 27, 1940 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, home Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 5'10" and 205 pounds, drafted from Chicago, 16 years pro. It notes he was a junior All-Star before turning professional. His NHL totals through 1974-75 are listed as 638 games, 27 goals, 110 assists, 137 points and 943 penalty minutes.

Edward Charles Van Impe reached the NHL with Chicago as a 26-year-old rookie in 1966-67, putting up 19 points in 61 games and finishing second to Bobby Orr in Calder Trophy voting. Chicago left him unprotected and Philadelphia claimed him in the 1967 Expansion Draft, making him the first skater the franchise selected after goaltenders Bernie Parent and Doug Favell.

Van Impe spent nine seasons with the Flyers and became the second captain in club history, wearing the C from 1968 until passing it to Bobby Clarke during the 1972-73 season. He was known for hitting, shot blocking and clearing the front of his own net, and he was a three-time All-Star Game selection. He was a fixture on the blue line for the Broad Street Bullies teams that won back to back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975, and his plus-16 in the 1975 playoffs tied Jimmy Watson for the NHL lead among defensemen. In 620 regular season games with Philadelphia he recorded 19 goals, 107 assists and 891 penalty minutes.

On January 11, 1976 at the Spectrum, Van Impe came out of the penalty box and delivered the hit on Valeri Kharlamov that led Red Army coach Konstantin Loktev to pull his team off the ice in protest. After a delay the Soviets returned and Philadelphia won 4-1, the only NHL victory over the Red Army in that exhibition series. He was traded to Pittsburgh in March 1976 and retired the following season after a shoulder injury, finishing with 11 NHL seasons. Van Impe is a member of the Flyers Hall of Fame. He died in 2025 at age 84.
