DESCRIPTION

1975 O-Pee-Chee #73 Derek Sanderson, New York Rangers. Graded PSA 8 NM-MT. Certification number 19419626. The card is from the 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee hockey set. The photos show the exact card and holder you will receive, so please review them closely for condition and centering.

The card front carries the printed notation that he was traded to St. Louis on October 30. The back lists him as a center, born June 16, 1946 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, home Boston, Massachusetts, 6'0" and 175 pounds, acquired in a trade with Boston, 11 years pro. It notes he was the NHL rookie of the year for 1967-68. His NHL totals through 1974-75 are listed as 464 games, 160 goals, 184 assists, 344 points and 792 penalty minutes.

Derek Michael Sanderson, known as Turk, played junior hockey with the Niagara Falls Flyers and won the Memorial Cup there in 1965. He earned a full-time roster spot in Boston in 1967-68, put up 24 goals and 49 points in 71 games with 98 penalty minutes, and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year, giving the Bruins back-to-back winners after Bobby Orr took it the previous season.

Sanderson centered Boston's checking line with Ed Westfall and Don Marcotte and became one of the league's most respected penalty killers and faceoff men. He won Stanley Cups with the Bruins in 1970 and 1972, and in Game 4 of the 1970 Final he made the pass from the corner that set up Bobby Orr's overtime Cup winner against St. Louis, the goal behind the most widely published photograph in hockey history. When he retired he was the NHL's career leader in shorthanded goals, and he still shares the Bruins playoff record with six.

In August 1972 he signed a $2.625 million deal with the Philadelphia Blazers of the WHA, briefly making him the highest-paid athlete in the world. A back injury limited him to eight games there before a buyout returned him to Boston. He was traded to the Rangers in June 1974, then on to St. Louis, and later played for Vancouver and Pittsburgh before retiring in 1978 with 202 goals, 250 assists and 911 penalty minutes in 598 NHL games.
